What do you get when the bowling alley is fully booked, there arent any movies to watch, and not in a mood for an outside dinner. Have you guessed yet?. No, let me tell you. You get a country that is soooooooo booring you could kill yourself.
Question is, is Muscat really boring, or is it we are so used with a certain lifestyle we end up making it boring?. Its a thought to ponder I guess!
Maybe I should ask myself this question assuming I am in another country, what if I was in Dubai. For one, I would have dozen of movie theatres to choose from, not only that, if a certain bowling alley is fully booked there is always another one around the corner. And dont let me start with the amount of various restaurants a person can choose from.
Conclusion, Muscat is not boring, its just that there arent many choices to choose from, we are stuck with couple of movie theatres, two bowling alleys and limited amount of restaurants that I guarntee that not a single soul in muscat havent dined in them (its no wonder if a certain restaurant is opened the entire country knows about it, its pathetic really)!

Welcome to Oman

Maybe cause til now i came just as tourist and maximum for periods of a month, but the pleasure to spend a night alone or with friends in Qantab just talking and laughing, can't be replaced from 100000000 theatres.

so muscat needs more choices - more restaurants, cinemas, bowling alleys etc.. perhaps some of the business-minded folks around here could make it possible

Unfortunately Popzi, that takes mucho dinero
Well, I think Muscat is not so boring, but its more or less the routine we get ourselves into.
Yesterday, my friends and I spent the day at the movies (we watched 3 of them).
We then went and made hotdogs and mashakeek on the beach.
I think its not so much of Muscat being a place with limited options, but its more of breaking out of the monotony of routines.

yeah, but i think so if anyone wanna enjoy can do that without any of those places, restaurants and cinema..u can change ur routine, irange picnics, overnights with family and some friends,,can do so many things and so many choices are there for enjoyments..

As i always tell everyone : Life is what you make it!
If you sit around and complain that muscat is boring then hell ofcourse your not going to have any fun! But if you get out there...meet your firends and do things that make you happy then you will enjoy it!
Most ppl would agree that for the younger generation lets say late teens to early 20's, that oman is boring and not much for them to do...well im sure that if me and my old school mates can make the most of oman when we come back home in the summer for the holidays then ANYONE CAN!(so much fun that we cant wait to come back for holidays and prefer oman over LONDOND AND CANADA!!! I MEAN COME ON! that must say something dont u think???)
Its also who you know! You could go out to a really boring bar...restaurant...or watch a boring movie...but if your with right crowd of people its a hell of a lot of fun believe me
so the moral of my above opinion: INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ABOUT IT...MAKE IT FUN YOURSELF!

As I know it, there is an underground life in Qatar, and you have to know the right people to have a good time

Underground life???? I don’t know much about that, maybe, but I've never seen it, nor do I want to.
Qatar is moving fast, too fast if you ask me. I like it just as it is, I am pushing 35 now, three years ago, my idea of a holiday was backpacking, dingy hotels, scuba diving and that sort of vacation that gives you a back ache. Now, I am more into vacations of nothingness. I get myself one chunky book, go somewhere quite, like a small island in Malaysia or Thailand, spend the entire mornings and evenings play with my kids, and read, and do absolutely nothing else, yeah I am getting old, and I like it.
For me, Doha is a blessing. My 5 year old daughters idea of fun is few rounds at the bowling ally at City center, or a day at the Doha zoo, or going to the horse race tracks, there is something every weekend there. Very un-demanding. But in 7 to 8 years time, this will change of course, I might just enjoy it as it lasts.

Mini,
Nice postings, as usual.
There is more to life than movie theatres, restaurants, and bowling alleys.
You are either a boring person yourself, or hanging with the wrong crowd.
Wake up and smell the coffee.

once again, if ppl sit back and complain that they have no friends and therefore dont have fun in oman - THATS JUST A LAME POOR EXCUSE! peopel in oman are very welcoming and friendly BELIEVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEE! You also have to make the effort to meet people...people wont just come to u if they dont know that you exist

Tell me how do you make friends in the first week arriving in a foreign country??
Not everyone is an extrovert !!
Tiger Lily
8th March 2005, 02:55 AM
MA,
It is easier when you are a student to make friends with a classmate.
But its a totally different thing when you are in the work force.Maybe going door to door and making some neighborhood calls is the way to do it?
Not being able ot meet people is not a lame excuse. Its just you need to familiarize yourself with the place.
Julieanne,
I agree with you. Not everyone is an extrovert.

julieanne i guess thats why they say patience is a virtue! after all rome was not built in a day right!
similarily you cannot make friends in just one week! It takes a while to first get settled in...to be aware with your surroundings and then to discover what there is on offer...if you have children who are in school im sure you would and probably already have made friends from other parents or by attending school activities with your children. I suppose it might be easier to make friends when you are younger BUT you can do it too!
You dont have to be an extrovert to make friends or socialize! Gaawwwddd people who know me will definately tell you what a shy quiete person i am yet i still make friends quite quickly....BECAUSE if its what you want...if u really are determined to meet new people then u'll get up and do something about it

I was with mini that particular day, i think Mucsat cam be very interesting city provided we had more movie theatres, more bollowing alleys, basically more stuff to choose from.

neo you dont even know me to make that comment! I know myself n people know me too....heeeeey fisa...shaq.....nomad...guys back me up sheeeesh so much for friends huh! lol
anyways HOW MANY cinemas do u want??? how many bowling alleys do you want???? how many shopping malls with the same things do you want????
even if there were more things people would still find a reason to complain...you guys should just be happy with what you have got! Theres many people in the world who dont even have access to a cinema!!

How many cinemas? Just one with 5 or 6 screens will be enough.
Bowling alleys? We have more than enough.
Malls? One decent one. Doesn't have to be huge. If City Center had more mens shops, a bookstore, an electronics shop, a Virgin Megastore, and a couple more restaurants and a cinema it would be more than enough for Oman's needs for the next 10 years.
A couple new restaurants in town would be nice too.
Other than that, I don't think Oman's boring. I think people who complain that they're board are usually bored no matter where they are.

Its not "Muscat is boring", even you are outside Muscat and have more choices (say Dubai) you might be bored!!!??
It all depend on us we are the one making our lives boring!! you can simply spend all ur days at home doing some activities with family and you'll be enjoying it..
or you could be in a place with tons of choices to choose from and have fun but you are not enjoying!!
having more cinemas wont help much, because the movies will be same!!

Just to correct your info, I lived in Muscat Almost all my life, beside few restaurants in the city, I havent dine in ALL of them, not the italian not the mexican or what so ever..
I love Home food, sitting with family share our busy day activities at work or school in the warmth of our dining room...this is enjoyment for me.

I think only hard-core party animals, used to disco and pub-hopping would be really bored out of their minds in Oman.
Otherwise, this beautiful country has so much to offer that I don't think anyone should be cribbing at all. Especially the travel, adventure and nature enthusiasts. And those who have vehicles are not constricted in movement at all! Only the public transportation system is so dismal here. A woman can't take a cab safely after dark. But car owners are just free to go driving anywhere they want, go see different places, enjoy the picturesque landscapes and scenery.
And about Muscat city life - after having lived in a really large and crowded city the past few years, it's a relief to be in a quieter, calmer, saner place, where you do actually get the time to do all the things you want to do, without getting sapped of all energy.
