Hi all

Well, the american british academy recieved a phone call this morning about a bomb threat on our school, so all the students had to be evacuated!!!! I was really scared actually especially when we saw about 8 four wheel drives full of the ROP. They got out of the cars with machine guns and we were all really frightened!!

I cant believe this happened to us! I dont know whats the next step people will take now that war is going to break out!

It is only natural that you should be scared I have two daughters at the British School and we also have to accept the fact that the British School is also a target and try to dampen their fears of being at school. You have to take comfort in the thought that the schools are very aware of the current situation and are taking advice from various sources and will do everything in their power along with the local authorities to keep you safe. If your safety is at risk then I'm sure they will take the best course of action.

Todays incident could well be a prank phone call but in the heightened tension it must be taken seriously. Seeing many armed police is for many children, especially small, a frightening experience but they are there to help protect you.

As far as whats the next step people will take who knows but try not to worry about what might or might not happen. I know it is easier said than done - I just soften some of the fears with my own children and playground chat brings us another.

And what exactly is the ABA sowing?? What did they do to deserve to be bombed (or threatened?)

hommemort1, i dont know how to answer that question except for the fact that people might think they could kill 2 birds with one stone by attacking the ABA - they see the name "american british" and automatically assume thats its a good target - Anyways, its actually got students from all over the world and very few american and british students are actually part of the fairly large community of ABA.

This is a message from the superintendant of our school:

Dear Parents,

This morning, March 17th, at approximately 8:50am, the school received a bomb threat via a telephone call taken by the school’s receptionist.

Immediately, the school enacted security procedures that involved (a) sweeping the Hall to establish a “safe zone” and (b) evacuating all the children to the safe zone in an orderly fashion. Also according to procedure, we contacted the ROP and the American and British Embassies.

We were advised at around 9:30 to clear out the campus so that the police could make a sweep of the entire premises. Teachers and staff immediately brought all the children out into the exterior parking lot, again according to procedure.

At around 10:00, it became apparent that the police sweep of the campus would take several hours. At that point, the administration made a decision to call into effect plans to gather all the children at the Rugby Club. The PTA phone tree was activated and parents and guardians were contacted to take their children home from there.

t should be noted that students were informed that an emergency evacuation drill was in effect. I was most impressed with the calm and responsible manner in which both students and faculty followed the necessary directions.

What I wish to bring to your attention is the following:

1. In such a situation it is imperative that parents remain calm. Your reaction will affect your child’s disposition.

2. Parents must ensure that the emergency contact number on the PTA phone tree is accessible, and that you carry your GSM with you at all times. Any changes to your contact number must be reported to the school office and your child’s homeroom parent immediately.

3. Parents assigned the task of homeroom contact parent must keep their phone list with them at all times, and contact parents must remain calm when contacting other parents.

I was impressed with how well our evacuation procedures ‘flowed’. I extend my sincere thanks to Mrs. Sylvie Van Thiel and Mrs. Sue Khammash for their efforts this morning in contacting homeroom parents. The ABA staff was also superb in terms of their professionalism and calm.

At around 1:00pm, the ROP completed a thorough sweep of the campus finding nothing and assured us that every effort is being made to trace the caller.

(there was more to the letter but was not refering to the incident of the bomb threat!)

Exactly. Go complain to Blair and Bush.

There's a thread about this in the Open Forum I think.

So, who could it be?

Inv,

May be the tone used was very rude and some got offended but the fact remain the same. Now tell me, don't we Arabs/muslims students get threaten in USA, just because of OBL and all of us are being labelled TERRORISTS.

On top of that their monsters leaders are the one dont know the word PEACE exist in the dictionary. I feel sorry for kids but its all happen in the war tension like this.

I hear what you're saying, but just because a few Americans were ignorant doesnt mean the rest of the world is entitled to being ignorant.

personally i dont think omanis are going to do anything, we are all nice people:) but if something does happen, blame no one but your leader! I dont believe that its the citizens falt that all this mess happened, for they have taken a very strong stand against the war, but war is war. I pray to god that nothing happens to you as well, i dont want things like that to happen to my country. Hopefully you will be safe.

19th March 2003, 12:54 PM
Yeah, lets hope nothing happens and if it does, point fingers at the mirror. Maybe its about time all the parents of the students rose up and spoke out against having their kids blown up because of their governments policies.

I just talked to my parents and they said they 'hear' the person who called was from ABA itself. How far is that true? Would anyone know?

I am pretty confident that the person who did it was from the school. I live in the States and i know about this kind of stuff... Somone probably had a midterm and didn't want to take it or something LOOOL. it happened in my school here a couple of times. I don't think that an omani called this in because all of us know the serious consequences that would happen

22nd March 2003, 12:38 PM
And id he/she is white, he/she will just be reprimanded? That would really piss me off. I say, jail and deport. The experience of Omani jails should be enough. He'll come out with a sore ass.
