better educational reforms. to help the kids in high school be capable of achieving what they did in school to be able to do the same in college.
When i was in MCBS...these new kids who had scholorships from the govt. didn't even know a single sentence of english. and my dean told me right infront of them that these guys have marks of 90+ in English.
and honestly i have seen the english papers of the govt. school....i don't even have to go to school to pass those tests.

Better Education System in the public schools is what we want.

"1) Speed limit should be lowered to 100 kph within the city to avoid accidents."

Forget that...

Teach people how to drive properly. The Oman Driving Test is a joke, and crack down on those people who buy their licenses...

SPEED DOES NOT CAUSE ACCIDENTS. STUPIDITY causes accidents.

My gosh... I love OMAN but there are quite a few things that could change... where to start...

from a business perspective...

CUSTOMS!! Needs to really get a life and understand that we are also a customer! We are not in the business of shipping arms, pornography, etc... we do ship a product that could be considered "interesting".. however... I cannot have containers of product sitting on the port because they are too lazy to deal with it!!

sorry for the rant but it is a pet rant at the moment and there seems to be no way of getting through to the right people to tell them our concerns!

cheers!

I want alot of things to change and to be improved on in Oman.
First: I would like to see an organized emergency dispatch service such as fireman, police, and ambulence. They are extremely slow and they ask the stupidest questions on the phone. You dial 999 and there are like if you would like an ambulence press 1, WHAT IF YOU ARE DYING common now. It should be like this, if someone makes a call and does not speak they should consider this fact: that person is at danger and they should properly try to locate him/her and get to them ASAP. that is their problem they take their time, it takes them 2 hours to get somwhere!
Second: Education in governemtns. Like invici said, the english curiculum. It is horrible and its very sad because the students don't learn anything. Another thing i would like to see change in education is the teaching style and the final exams. Its almost like you have to memorize the whole book to get a good grade. Since when was school like that? And you know what the result of that is??? People dont learn, if we had a discussion class where we did projects and not just sat there and listened to teacher talk the whole time, maybe you would actually LEARN something.
Third: Customer service as some of you said. Not just in stores, but also in government offices. They treat you with disprespect, i walk in there and i say assalaam 3alaikum and NOBODY replies, what kinds of manners are those. I understand that the people are teird and stressed out but they should AT LEAST try to deal with you. In the United States the have a golden rule that i think should be applied in oman " The customer is always right, even if hes wrong!" Customer satisfaction is the most important thing in buisness growth.
Fourth: Allow more people to start their own buisnesses, encourage trade. Its like a monopoly in Oman, one person owns a whole industry!!! that is not fair for the new players in the game.
I LOVE OMAN WITH ALL MY HEART AND I WANT THE BEST FOR IT, AND I THINK THESE ARE SOME NECESSARY CHANGES TO BE MADE. There have been alot of improvements in our dear country, and many were excellent, but we still have a long way to go so that we could grow as omanis, as a people, and one of the greatest cultures and heritages.

How about plate numbers that fit cars. I still am amazed each time I drive by the license place and see the little businesses that have been set up to cut these plates down to fit the cars.

But it takes so long for all the paperwork to be processed, and then they make the people run from this department to that department and its back to square 1.

I know something that I considered when I was in Muscat during the very hottest time of the year. That would be to replace all water plumbing pipes with PVC, plastic. I know, I know.... too expensive, never going to happen. It was just my fantasy because the shower was SO hot. The cold side only in use, didn't matter.... the water was scalding. My Omani friends laughed and told me their secret. In the summer, the hot water tank is turned off, but still fills with water on demand, and since it is stored in a closet in the house with the A/C on, this water is cooled. Thus in the summer, you use the hot faucet and cold faucet in reverse, mixing it so that the water doesn't scald you. Clever Omanis.

There should be Road Traffic officers at almost every junction on the main highway and the internal roads. To Catch offenders and probably reduce the percentage of annual accident in the country.
I don't think the radars are effective at all, because at the end of the year you usually know somwone who knows someone and you get at 50% off the total charges and all is forgotten till the upcoming year.

better educational systems (especially government schools ) thorugh out oman ..which then results in a very civilised modern mentality, which many ppl (specially guyz) suffer from.
for example
you get a person from a town out side muscat and put him in the muddle of muscat .. he'll prbably think he was immigrated to a foreign country !

another thing .. taxi's need more care .. its either a mini bus or a normal taxi .. both is just too fussy !
they need meters + mo7taram cars , some taxis ka2ano el nas are pushing it ! + ONLY ONE PERSON IN A CAR .. ma eysheelo ahl el 7ara kelhom and try to their destination in the shortest time possible !

a mo7taram ammusment park methl el 3alam (i'd luv to c that)

i guess thats it 4 now .. ill let u know if i remember anything :P

I wrote a long reply but deleted it. I'm not going to write about radical changes I want to see. I'll write just about the simple things that might make my life better:

- Close the Directorate General of Culture. All they do is censor movies and music.

- What do we need a ministry of information for, and why do have to run the tv and the radio station? I'm sure there are many private companies that would jump at the chance of running either of the two, and make a profit out of it too.

- Why can't we have a two day weekend in the private sector?

- Open up the country to the outside already. Let's share the beauty of our country to the world.

- Wouldn't hurt to have real broadband access. Why must we Omanis always be the poor neighbours who are always jealous what the other kids on the street have?

I'd like to see the following:

1. A more efficient, better customer service oriented public service in the governemnt sectors such as directorates, hospitals and ministries.

2. The idea where women can't do anything without having their father/brother/wakeel's permission (like going to get their driving permit, ID/passport)... If we women are working and supporting our-selves, I don't see the logic of that... We are still in the dark ages even though we already have women represented in the Majlis A'Shura and recently a Minister!

3. Discrimination in the work place... Unfortunately, people still look at us women as a problem/tainted when employed cause we eventually get married, have kids, etc... This is a natural thing for women to do... The pressure is on the woman too to help support her family and try to make a better living for their kids and help their spouse. They too have the right to a career/future...

Cheers!

1. Standards for ALL TAXIS i.e. meters
2. More Police in order to pay attention and catch some A$$holes on the roads
3. Transpearancy on road and land planning
4. Families to pay a small fee for schools. This will ensure that parents find out more on how their kids are doing in school
5. Increase taxes for people leaving to UAE via road. Oman pays our salaries and we go spend it in dubai boosting their economy, SO WHAT if they charge 7 rials per car or 2 rials per person in the car.
6. Emission tests for vehicles (Cars, trucks...etc). A standard fuel emissions test needs to be adopted. It is atrocious when you see some trucks and all that smoke coming out. It is also bad when you see old cars passing by and you cannot breathe for a few seconds!
7. Improved Emergency services: Fire and Ambulance
8. Introduce the concept of carpools in order to reduce congestion and future congestion on the roads
9. Higher standards of education in school and Universities. None of this spoon feeding bull$hit
10. Introduce the concept of part-time jobs. This will teach people the value of earning their own bread before they finish school/after school/uni, job hunting...

THE BIGGEST ONE OF ALL FOR ME......

THE END OF WASTA!!!

LastAmeriGent
7th May 2004, 03:03 PM
Ok, here's a change that would help.... those jetway things at the airport that stretch out tubes to the aircraft that allow you to simply walk off the plane and into the terminal. No more stairways and buses, please.

End WASTA. This is a disguised corruption and while it may seem that you are doing a friend or a relative a favour when you give WASTA you are hurting others and helping “hate and Hiqid” grow among us. It is hard for a nation to move forward effectively with corruption living among its people!

I suspect that nearly 50% of Omanis are below 20 years old. This energy is not well directed. The evidence is in the crimes and drug statistics. This massive youth energy can be contained with the correct programs. Both the parents and the schools should have those responsibilities. The government’s role will be in placing the right incentives for the schools, parents and kids to work together.

There are many issues to discuss but what disturbs me the most is seeing the young generation not given a chance to fully develop their potentials and their energy wasted in malls and “aaras”. Many are so cynical of their future. And when our young ones see a gleam of opportunity on their horizon WASTA comes running to close the door on their face!

Having a democratic representative government.
Getting rid of these stupid laws, eg marriage restrictions
give people the rights to bring their family members if they wish to do so.
Have enforceable citizineship rules. e.g married a foreigner, having lived with her/him for decades and have kids together should be enough qualifications to allow you to apply for citizenship if you wish to do so.

These are obvious issues for any regime.

Most of the points have been coverred by people who obviously love Oman. I agree with all of them, But I would like to add another important point"ACCOUNTABILITY". Without it there will be no real progress.

If i would write on the changes that I would like to see my country have a might write a book on this . ..but far most my book might not be readen or understood or agreed by all as for me the biggest changes that i would like to see in Omanis is the attitude towards society , social life , individual development and realistic government strategies ...

Introduce the "coin phone system", where by one can make a 3 min
call using a 50 Bzs coin. Small coin operated boxes can be kept in
many shops, shopkeeper can be given a percentage of the profit.
