While we were out last night, we were texted and told that there was a riot going on in Shatti al Qurm, and that cars were being overturned. Does anyone have any idea if anything happened, or is this just the Muscat rumour mill once again going into overdrive?

muscatplatypus, what time did u get the sms? coz I live very close to that place and was in the area until around 11pm and noticed nothing except the usual peaceful weekend traffic jam at shatti cinema when a new show timing starts! unless someone confirms it...its just a false rumor...

Do you really think ROP would let a Riot break out in Shatti...? For nothing it must be a rumor, how is that possible......

Guess it was just the good old rumour mill going into overdrive then.
I did hear of one incident on the same night where an English guy had his car wrecked when shopping in Ruwi, apparently because of the Iraqi crisis.

I think by changing the name of this forum to gossip brought alot of rumors with it. I mean please, how would those guys know those four cars belongs to westerners. Did they intentional wait for them or something, some sort of grand plot. Give US A BREAK!

Neo it makes perfect sense!
The cars who were targeted happened to belong to my mums friends and we think that the young teens who spend their time at the "pool" hall across from the cinema must have been watching!

"Wow. Amazing. Americans and Brits have to be house arrested because of their governments. And they still support them. How blind can you get?"
Chitchi, how can you say something like that. Our nationality does not mean that we blindly agree with our government policies.
We come from a democratic society and we elect our leaders - I don't remember seeing an election manifesto stating that if Tony Blair was elected then he would join with the US in war with Iraq!!
However, if that is the course that the government decides to take, the only way that people can show their disapproval is by not voting for him at the next election.
As for being under house arrest - it's a matter of being sensitive to the feelings of those around us, and aware that some peoples attitudes towards Westerners may be slightly hostile at the moment.
Not everyone strives for understanding such as you get in the Forum. Some are more happy to strike now and ask questions later, an attitude being reflected in Iraq at the moment wouldn't you say?

Excuse me, chitchi, but there are many british and american people who are completely against this war on iraq. Juts because we are nationals of america or the UK, it doesnt mean we support the actions of our government and presidents!

Saw a silver bmw 3 series drive past pizza hut in MQ and and a person on the passenger side fire a pistol in the air. About 3-4 shots in rapid succession. It looked like a police issue browning high-power. Definalety sounded like one. With people like that around and the situation in Iraq its a matter of time till some1 is shot.

Sapphire,
Im sure it's the street kids who have nothing better to do that their usual activities (theft and vandalism). I dont think this has anything to do with Westerners being targets as Morbid pointed out. A few of my family members including both my parents has their cars broken into. My mom's car mobile was stolen and a side window was smashed. My father's car was professionaly broken into, and some of his things in the locked glove compartment were stolen. Sometimes, these things happen in daylight.
