Do u wana remain watching TV for the rest of ur life or do wana upgrade it?
u have to set ur self a set of goals...in order to achieve them u gota go through different steps one of them is studying now.

Sheriff I know what you go through
Well I think that you have to be in the right mind set in order to concentrate. Some people find it easier to study in certain atmospheres.
For example, I find that it has to be completely silent, I have to be alone in my room and the room has to be tidy...thats how i concentrate the best. Others can concentrate and study more when they have some music in the background.
Anyhow, you have to remember that these tests and exams will affect your status in the future and its what you do now that determines where you will be and what kind of job you will get or where you will go for college/university. U should also keep in mind that there are many children in the world who would love to have the chance to study and have a good education, so make use of what God has provided you with and what your family are providing you with.
Education is the most important thing in todays world, without it theres not much to do.

One more thing, dont try to force yourself to study, it has to come naturally..it has to be something you really want and not something that you feel is a burden and have to do!

I always study last minute... It sucks! I know... but that's how I am!!
But that only works for classes like Math and Physics. I like classes like there where all you need are a few equations and you can work everything out from that... I hate classes like Sociology where you have to memorize stuff... I hate memorizing! I'm too impatient for that!
I have the same problem. I used to watch so much TV last year that I decided not to get cable this year. Doesnt really work. My computer has replaced my tv.
What I do, though, is make the apartment's atmosphere dull (dim all the lights except for the table I study on), mute my computer, switch off my TV and keep my phone right beside me (so I don't have to get up. If I get up once I dont come back until half an hour later). I can't ignore my phone calls. Curiosity kills me. I also keep a jug of water on the table. Its refreshing. All this makes a much more serious atmosphere. Sometimes, I switch off all the lights in the apt except the study table one. Works well. And when I am at my study table, my back is facing my pc. That works too. Set yourself a target. Give yourself treats once the target has been met.

Just check out my room. You KNOW I study!
On a serious note. The subjects I can study are stuff like I said - Physics and Math. I still haven't found a tolerable way to study Sociology or History or anything like that. It's just not me I guess.
What I do when I study put some music in the background and then work on as many problems as possible. Then I'll take a little break (check out Omanforum ) and after that start again... If I'm doing something I love - like Programming! Then I'm in the Zone! I just keep at it!!

thanks for the advise guys, what about the time intervals? do u ppl study continuously or take a break, and how long should u study before taking a break ? how long should the break be ?
And Morbid, u cannot reaally Not force urself to study. because no one wants to study, u just have to do it .
Same hear Dark Angel, i really hate studying subjects where i have to memorise stufff, but strangely enough thats what im best at, i can memorise very very quickly.

Sheriff u cant force yourself to study, you have to want to study for your own benefit!

Also, study for an hour straight and then take like a 15 minute or 20 minute break...refresh yourself, get something cold to drink and some snacks to munch on and then continue...and try to plan out your study time. Make a timetable in advance...like a week before the exam and say like on saturday I will study for maths for 2 hours and then stick to that and then monday i will continue studying my maths and so on... It works! Trust me, I'm doing the International Baccaleaurate diploma at school and if one thing it teaches you, it teaches you to organize your times!! Because you will have sooo many deadlines at the same time and may have 3 of your higher level subject exams all on the same day...so ORGANIZATION is the key to good study skills

Hmmmm, international Baccaleaurate Diploma, interesting, what is it about? do u do it in school ?
Just make sure you study longer than you break.
Dont set a time limit, set a goal of chapters or pages. Always helps. Or, when you really feel you are satisfied and you need a break, give yourself one. I can never study with music. Probably because I have to do a LOT of reading. I'm into Arts (major poli sci but electives like anthropology, sociology, religion) so I have to read for hours and hours.
A month ago, I got myself a "Get Organized" book but I am SO disorganized that I havent touched the book yet. I have no more exams though. I only had one which was over before the exam period started. The rest are all long-ass essays that count for 30-40%. All of exam period is gonna be a holiday for me

Try 2 take books as friend or game So when you`ll study it you wont feel bored and be alone so you`ll concentrate.
enjoy da whole day so you`ll be in good mood make sure that ur room is clean ...Then start with easy subject *as long you dont feel like studing*
But try next time 2 study everyday at least for 1/2 hours ..

Here's the famous SQ3R technique for developing effective study skills.
Survey (S): Don't just open a book and start. Survey it first by looking at the contents, titles, chapters, and then go inside.
Question (Q: Question what you survey. Is this book better than others? How is it different? and so on
Read (R): Only in this third step you start reading (Reading skill effectiveness is a different topic)
Recall (R): Having read, close the book and attempt recalling the main points.
Review (R): Go back to see whether you recalled the main points correctly.
Try this technique all of you students and share your experience with us. Best of luck!!

You have to set priorities. It's quite simple really. I can watch TV but pay the price and fail my exam or perform poorly on it. Or I ignore the TV and other similar distractions, and focus on my studies. I usually like being alone in a quiet room away from the TV, phone etc. I make sure nothing is near me that can distract me. I also like to finish things up before it's due so that I dont panic and forget everything!

Sheriff yes its a high school thing, hence its completed in your last 2 years of school and then you take the IB exams at the end of your last year...!!!
In the IB diploma/certificate, you have to do 6 subjects and one must be a language, so here are the options of subjects at my school
English Higher or standard level
Theatre Arts
French/Arabic (or u could do another language outside of school)
Math studies, math methods, or math higher
Biology higher level or standard level
Geography Higher level or standard level
Environmental systems standard level only
Chemistry higher or standard
Physics Higher or standard
Computer studies higher or standard
Art Higher or standard
Economics Higher or standard!
And on top of that you have to take a class known as TOK (theory of knowledge) where you have to do a TOK presentation which is assessed internally by the teachers and also externally by IB examiners. You also have to write a 2000 word essay for coursework which is assessed by IB examiners.
You also have to do CAS which stands for creativity, action, and service! You have to have 50 hours for each. So basically in 2 years you have to do 50 hours of something creative (like lets say you paint the walls of the new gym at school)...you have to do 50 hours of action (such as a sport that you like or even just going to the gym etc to get the hours) and you have to provide for the community...so like if you sold tickets at a school preformance or you participated in organizing a belly dancing class etc....but you have to have a total of 150 hours at the end and it has to be recorded in a cas book...with signatures of people who supervised you etc!
And for each subject we have coursework which counts as 25% of our final IB exam grade. So for geography, we have to do 2 fieldwork...one of them is where we analyze the CBD in Ruwi and the other is analzing the sand dunes at aviation beach! Both fieldwork have to be at least 2000 words or more! We also have world literature essays to write, so if your higher level english you have 2 world literature essays to write which have to be 1500 words! If your standard you just have to write 1 world literature essay!
And for math, you have alot of math portfolio projects to do whcih also count as a 25% for ur final IB exam grade!
and so on...!!!!!
So the IB programe is really really tough and the hardest thing is keeping up with deadlines because everything becomes due around the same time. Like geography would be due on february 19 and then your english would be due on february 25th....so ORGANIZATION skills is very important!
One last thing, (sorry to bore you all!) while doing the IB you must take 3 higher level subjects and 3 standard level subjects!
And when your final IB exams arrive in MAY..you will find that you have 3 exams on the same day and they might all be your higher level subjects!!!! Which is very stressful because some papers can be 2 hours and 15 minutes each!

So to conclude, i think your fairly lucky if your not in my place, coz if you were a grade 11 and grade 12 student at the ABA, you will seriously need lessons on organizing your time wisely...but you know what its all worth it at the end, especially when you start hearing from universitys and recieving unconditional offers wow!

You haven't done CBSE. That's the Indian standard of education. And it's HARD AS FREAKIN' HELL. I hated it. Does give you a lot of knowledge though. It's just the quantity of work. During your senior year you do: University Physics II, Optics, Electrical Networks, Univeristy Math (Calculus I, II and some Diff Eq, Discrete Math, 3D Math), Inorganic Chem, Quantitavive and Qualitative Analysics, Organic Chem I and II and if you're taking Computer Science, Programming and Data Structures and SQL.
Yeah, I've heard abt that. I hear they dont let you use calculators.

Just because we have a hobbie such as using the forum, it doesnt mean we are all going to fail and become sweepers who sweep the streets etc!
I dont think omanforum should ban all students, we are old enough to make our own decisions and if we want to come to the forum during our month of exams then its up to us..no one will be affected accept us...

Morby, As much as I enjoy your posts, pleeease, chill out and don't take everything so personally.
My mum used to tell me that if i didn't study, then I would end up on the check out of a supermarket!! I took Calkoons remarks to be those that an older sibling would say. He wasn't critisising anyone in particular, he's just making the point that he doesn't want anyone to suffer in their exams and fail.
I think it's quite sweet actually.
Mary
7th April 2003, 12:01 AM
Morbid, no one is acussing you of anything, I think we know that you study hard, then why get pissed (pls excuse)? If you study hard and can manage your time well, then the above does not apply to you, and congratulations on how well you organise your time, then giving your best advice, as you have done above, would be sufficient for the less organised guys to get back on track, which is what this topic was about, I thought.
Calkoon, sorry, I don't think banning students is a solution. And anyway if you did ban them, there are plenty of other distractions besides the forum, I would think, and they would soon find something else to occupy themselves with. We can just give them the best advice possible based on our experiences and hope they are wise enough to concentrate on their studies....

Mary DUH I know that he wasnt criticizing anyone in particular or whatever, I was just making a point that just because you enjoy visiting omanforum, it doesnt mean you leave your studies behind! And im an example of that therefore i dont think its fair for calkoon to ban all the students - especially that what they do with their time is actually their own business! I respect that calkoon is caring or doesnt want us to fail exams...but where is the correlation and where are the statistics that show that every student will fail or do poorly on their exam if they are on the computer surfing the net while they take time to relax and do something which makes them happy!
You cant expect students to keep their nose in the books for 1 month before the exams! We need a break too sometimes...
and anyways, if you have organized your time wisely, then there is no problem!

Just make sure that you set targets. Meet those targets and reward urself.
Say you have 10 chapters in Business Psychology. I will finish 1-3 then will watch tv for 30 minutes and have a snack..
then 4-7 and 8-10 do the same thing...go out for a walk, get some fresh air....that kind of stuff...but make sure you get a good nights sleep before the exam!

As long as you've made notes throughout the semester, you'll have no trouble studying last minute. Of course, it also depends on what you're studying. I'm in arts, so it works for me. Some times people might confuse determination with good intentions...we have intentions to study..but we just cant get our asses bothered about it..and when you are faced with the reality "[censored] i have an accounting test tommrow and i only know how to add and subtract" then we get ourselves moving and when we come out of the test..we say sheesh..it wasnt that hard..iF ONLY I HAD STUDIEd..
QUESTION: how do you get yourself motivated to study? and i mean really motivated...how do you really push yourself..
guys..its harder than you think ( personal experience)

During my undergraduate years i was never or let us say rarely motivated. Looking back at it, i always say ONLY IF i wud have did this or that. But now its kinda different, ok we all reach a point when we feel fed up like anything..but when u enjoy what u r doing/studying that by itself gives u a motivation. N then i often think "Eli 3alik 3alik" so i might as well get it right the first time

Nada, i wish i could think like that " ili 3alyk 3alyk"...
i swear...everytime am faced with such a situation ( everyday) i ask myself..what is missing..wallahi i try all sorts of things..i say alrigth..maybe it the atmosphere in the room..so i jump up..make the room look all cozy and stuff..then i say..maybe if i had a long hot shower it would awaken me and motivate me in some way...so i go on...nothing happens...maybe maybe...maybe if i watch a funny movie it would -in some mysterious way- drive me to my books....
i might sound like am making this up...lakin wallahi..deep inside..i feel there is something missing..i am able to do well..and get BRIGHT COLOURED marks..but there is something missing...or is it just pychological?!..

I know its easier said than done, it all depends on the person himself, let us say that u wana finish one or two chapter for today, it doesn’t matter what time you start or what time you finish, the most important thing is to bare in your mind that you have to finish it before tomorrow, whether you start in the morning or afternoon or evening, you should just do it. I usually use this method and it works most of the time with me.

NaDa, I said Reward not Abuse!
It happens, but you also have to be determined and focused. I'm sure you are but when you find yourself taking a longer break, then punish yourself, eat anchovies with chili seeds!
Also listen to Proto...good advice!

Well Nomad..i use the punishment system often when i dont meet my target set for a particular day. Like yesterday, it was a movie day for me if i managed to stick to the schedule. But since i was being a not very good girl, i didnt finish so had to stay in my room n feel it!

and the 99p american doughnuts?
I thought that when I left Uni, I was done with studying, in the academic sense...when I was employed at a bank, the first thing they did was make me do an online course!
When I left the bank, I started elsewhere and now I have to do courses...it's not as bad though...was in dubai in Jan for 2 weeks fully paid for and in march was in the UK for about 3 weeks paid for by the company so can't complain...
It just goes to tell you that studying never stops...so for those doing your undergrad, realise that this is the beginning of a neverending road!

This reward system does work.....when I had summer classes I used to have lectures from Mon~Thu....I'd divide my week into two, full study for 3.5 days and full bay3nha for 3.5 days...u'd find me in the first half of the week so serious, from lectures straight to the apt for studies, whereas in the 2nd half of the week I'd probably be back to the apt the 2nd day morning if not evening...its not that I'd hang out in nightclubs, bars, or striptease places...nah I actually hate those places, its more like hanging out with friends and enjoying our time...I don't think I ever tried the punishment system, it kinda lowers ur motivation if u know what u gona end up with...unlike the reward system where u r looking to amuse ur self...

If you study on a continuous basis from day one, you will end up enjoy studyin, because it naturally puts you ahead of your classmates.
As Nunita mentioned, you only need a few hours a day, 3 to 4 hrs a day is more than enuff for undergraduates.

Dark Angel,
"You haven't done CBSE..."
What does CBSE stand for? How is it compared to A levels for example? How many years does CBSE take?
Thanks
