I was going through Thursday magazine.. and a page caught my eyes, its called " words verses".. wht was really weird is its abt a contest for teenagers... and 100% of the contestants are Indians ( plz guys no offence is meant here), why dont I see any Omani generation taking part in these quizes and contests ?? Am sure alot of them are gifted enough to send in something... or is it the magazine that concentrates on some certain types of people ??

Probably coz its published in English catering the expat community in Oman?

I think the magazine (and the newspaper) mainly target Indians. Sometimes, the newspaper has half a page on Oman and 2 pages on India. Very very disappointing. I wouldnt want to subscribe to the Observer because its govt owned and I dont like that idea. The only choice left is T of O and that sucks. There's no such thing as news for Omanis in English in Oman. Its sad. Its probably because of the lack of English speaking Omanis. Doesnt anyone have any figures?

Check out Arabic magazines and newspapers. I've seen a lot of good stuff written in Arabic by Omanis (poems, verses, and short stories).

okay so tell me you guys. you all know english ...how many of you contribute to the newspapers and mags?

4th April 2003, 10:40 AM
Yeah but there isnt much opinion. No coulmnists. There is that Zidjali guy but I dont know if I'd call him a real journalist. I'm just *not* satisfied with Omani journalism. We need more freedom plus everyone needs to wake up and talk about whats going on around the Arab world (in english). I've never really read an Arabic newspaper but I'm thinking of starting to buy the famous Egyptian Al-Ahraam. I just discovered a huge store that had the newspaper. And its pretty cheap too. $1.5

Chitchi,

Youth Observer is designed by an Omani woman who also runs interviews with kids in Schools etc. She also takes the pictures, lays everything out and does all the graphic designs but of course before it's published, it has to be approved. I saw parts of her work before the first issue was published - a lot of hard work was put in it, and all of it was done by her. I believe every issue of Youth Observer is done by her if my memory serves me right because the chick is a relative of mine. Check under Design Consultant, it says Sital Computer Grafix. She's the same person who designed the logo of this forum and her nick name was Grafix.

She's done a great job!

No way! I've met her. She came to our school in grade 11 to tell us about a career in graphic design. She is excellent. I've seen some of her work. I think the design of the site is amazing. There is a bit of contribution from non-Omani students though.

This is amazing. I'm really impressed. This lady is great. Apparently, shes the only female graphic designer in Oman.

You should see some of her work that she produced in the last year. You cant even compare it to her past work because it's just too magnificent. She designs very creatively, some really contemporary stuff, and chooses colors very intelligently depending on the nature of the business or function. She's also designed free fliers for a charity (for disabled children) and other things. She's got a good heart too and charges really low fees to design business cards, company logos, fliers, brochures etc.

Anyhow, what contribution is from non-Omani students? just curioius.

As for being a graphic designer, yes, she's the only one who's got a degree and masters in graphic design, but I know a few Omanis who can actually do lots of good graphic design work with video and sound effects.

The indian schools in Oman influence their students to send in their stories and poems, and ofcourse they are taught in english, hence posting it in an english written magazine

Thursday Magazine had a section called ‘Take a Break’ for which they invited contributions from readers in the form of articles or poems. I don’t know if they are continuing with that. I found it rather disappointing then, that contributions from Omani’s were very rare…almost nil. The magazine was desperate for contributions, and hence it was very easy to get ones articles/poems published in it!

If that section is still there I am sure they will carry Matrex Girl’s poems.

TOI hosts the inter school quiz show (easily one of the largest entertainment event in the country).

But this year (5th april) was the first time that a local pvt. school took part. Azzan bin Qais Private School (represented by Michelle A. Barbour and Noor Maqbool Hussain Al Zadjali)

I always used to wonder why? is language such a big barrier?

Thursday is a terrible mag. I find it impossible to read it. Maybe i am not the target segment for it. The only thing readable is the comics section.
