There appears to be a road being built in Wadi Khuwair, behind Zakher Mall, near STS Workshop.
Any idea what it is all about?

The Southern Expressway will run behind Khuwair and all the way till Bait Al Baraka roundabout. The one you see near Zakher Mall is called the Central Corridor. It runs from Madinat Qaboos starting next to the Al Maha petrol station through the middle of AlKhuwair and then comes out in Baushar at the traffic light next to the Omasco wherehouse and ends at the roundabout in front of the sports stadium.

Muscati, I think what Smiley mean is the road construction from the roundabout near Zaker mall to the souther expressway at the wadi where STS workshops are located, this is a link between the Alkhwair interchange on the southern expressway, and the central corridor.

Yes Karim thats what I mean.
What happens to the Southern Expressway after the round about at the stadium?
I am told the Southern Expressway will render the Ghala roundabout (after Royal Hospital as you come in from Omasco warehouse end) obsolete.
Right now that round about is absolute misery - I get stuck there everyday for at least 5 minutes.
This is one round about where cars, trucks and trailers just do not stop even if they see you already in the round about.

Smily3- you're confusing the Southern Expressway and the Central Corridor. The Expressway is 53km long but in many press releases is said to be 80km long- I guess that takes into count the 12 massive interchanges it will include that connect it to the existing highway. It starts in Qurm and runs non-stop all the way till the Naseem Park roundabout in Maabela. It will not be ready till around national day 2009, if it isn't delayed as per market rumors. But 5 of the Southern Expressway's interchanges are supposed to be ready this year at National Day. These include the interchange in Qurm (if you notice there's a lot of work under the Qurm flyover these days), and the interchange at the airport roundabout.
The Central Corridor is only 6km long and should be ready by November this year.
Once this central road gets ready later this year, you can go from you Madinat Qaboos straight to Ghala without having to stop at any of those roundabouts. The only bottleneck will be the Royal Hospital roundabout. And that will remain till the Southern Expressway opens in 2009.
One thing that hasn't been made clear is whether trucks and heavy transport will be allowed to use the expressway. If not, then Ghala roundabout will remain the nightmare that it is because it is the only access for all the trucks coming from the industrial area to the highway. However, in the long run once the southern express starts the land next to it will become too valuable to continue to be used as labor camps and industrial property, so in the long run Ghala will become a commercial and residential area and all those trucks will go elsewhere.

I heard that Ghala godowns will be moved behind cement factory area, and the Place will be built as NEW commercial centres.
