Dubai: The Swedish furniture chain Ikea is going to expand in the Gulf region and plans to open two new stores in Oman and Qatar, the company's country operations and project manager in Dubai, Siddarth Bhide, told Gulf News.
In Abu Dhabi, Ikea is planning to enlarge its existing store in the Marina Mall, Bhide said.
The expansion plans are apparently unaffected by the current economic climate which had an impact on sales for many other retail businesses in the region. "Ikea continues to offer customers affordable, functional and well designed furniture," said Bhide. "Our business continues to grow, but at a lower rate than it did the past three years. In the current environment this is a proof of the strength of the Ikea brand and the loyalty of our customers," he adds.

The expansion plans in the Gulf region are in line with the announcement of the newly appointed Ikea chief, Mikael Ohlsson, who will succeed the present CEO Anders Dahlvig in September this year. Ohlsson said Ikea's focus will be less on countries with saturated marets like the US or Europe, but more on emerging markets like China, Russia, and others.
Ikea opened its largest store by far in the Middle East in November 2005 at the Dubai Festival City Mall. The 24,500-square metre outlet is managed by Al Futtaim Retail on a franchise basis. Ikea opened its UAE operations in 1991 on Zabeel Road and then moved to Deira City Centre in 1995. In Abu Dhabi, the store will be expanded from currently 9000 square metres to 20,000, almost the size of the Dubai store.
Besides the expansion to Oman and Qatar, Ikea is also going to open new stores in Saudi Arabia, where it currently operates in Riyad, Jeddah and Dammam. There is also one Ikea store in Kuwait.
"Ikea is unique in many aspects, one of them being the buying process that is different compared to other retailers," Bhide said. "The Ikea design is unique in this market as it is simple, timeless, functional and affordable, thus acceptable to the majority of people."
Currently, Ikea has a presence in 32 countries and operates 296 stores. According to Ohlsson, the company does not plan to close any stores or exit any markets "in the near future".

So... where will it be?

Rumors I've heard are:

1. (most likely) The Tilal complex next to LuLu's in Bowsher
2. (probably not) The Shopping Center at Blue City. Although it wouldn't open for a few years yet, so it's possible...

I also heard it is going to be next to Lulu Hypermarket in baushar. Perhaps thats why the are building that huge basment car park there.

Really, I dont think there is anywhere else. It's got to be LuLu or Tilal Complex, there isn't anything else remotely big enough anywhere near to completion in next 12-36 months.

There's no way it can fit into Lulu's - that is so crowded, and the parking is so bad there. The Tilal looks right in terms of size, location etc

Lulu is building a mall which they claim will have something like 100,000 square meters of retail space. That's big. It's almost as big as Muscat City Center.

Doubtful. The two sides of the Al Futtaim family dont get along and if you notice you will see that Al Futtaim Trading avoids opening outlets of their stores in MAF malls. Even Oman they opened M&S and Toyrs R Us in Bahja instead of MCC.

Any idea who is their local agent ? Or usually they don't need one to operate in Oman ?

Muscati,

Yeah I didnt think of that. But they are in the Festival City which belongs to MAF. Previousely they were also in the Deira City Centre.

Protol man, Al Futtaim trading are the retailers for Ikea in the GCC. They dont need a local agent to conduct business in Oman.

Festival City, the entire project, is owned by the other Futtaims.

Majid Al Futtaim only has the shopping malls branded City Center in UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Egypt, plus Mall of the Emirates and some hotels. MAF also has some retailing activity, but nothing like his brother's business. When the brothers split, Majid took the malls (and cash, I'm sure) while the brother kept everything else including the Toyota and Honda agencies for the UAE.

This is public information, even reported in the UAE press at that time in 2000. Apparently the feud between the brothers was really bad and then Sh. Mohammed bin Rashid got involved and mediated between them to split the business.

Pretty much the same like what happened in Oman between Suhail and Saud Bahwan, except here there was no intervention from the ruler.

AlFuttaim are the franchisees for Ikea in UAE and now maybe for Oman also. Ikea has different franchisees for Kuwait (Al Homaizi) and Saudi.

Ikea means one horrible thing surely - the traffic around that place!

Is the current Lulu store going to get integrated into the new Mall?
