Today I hang my head in shame at being Scottish. First time in my life I have ever said that, especially when I saw Sky News this morning and saw the celebrations for Megrahbi when he arrived back in Libya. They even waved Scottish flags.
Why should he get to say goodbye to his family, the people on the aeroplane didn't get the chance to say goodbye to their families.
Anyway rant over. I am off to take my clan plaque off the wall.

I'm in Scotland at the moment and there is disbelief about it and very little support. It is a very sad day that he has been freed on compassionate grounds. What compassion did he show to the people on the plane that night?
In all he has spent 2 weeks behind bars for each person he killed.

I aagree with you completely; he should have spent whatever time he has left in jail - the ultimate punishment.

The celebrations on his arrival could lead one to believe that he was acquitted of his crime not released on compassionate grounds. I dont think the people who freed him could have anticipated the hero's reception that he got. People like him donot deserve any compassion.

Justice is topsy turvy.
In one country one young girl is killed albeit with a golden sword for extra/pre marital sex, an act that killed nobody and possibly hurt nobody either.
In another country, a person that deliberately killed scores of people and hurt so many hundred lives is shown compassion and allowed to walk free.
He should have been tortured to death. Shame on the people that welcomed him.

The decision is influenced by some political consideration. He should not have been released. Nations should be tough on terror.

More of an Economic consideration then political. In yesterday's news i saw that UK companies are vying for oil exploration and tapping of oil. At present only 25% of the resources are tapped and 75% is up for grabs and by releasing Megrabhi on compassionate grounds UK is trying to win favors from Libya.
Economic down trend sure does change stance taken by allied countries.....

The decision was political, but nothing to do with UK-Libya trade.
There exists a substantial body of evidence which now shows that Megarhi was not "the Lockerbie bomber". His Appeal would almost certainly succeed. That's why the Scottish legal establishment has been doing everything it can to stall or forestall that Appeal.
Megrahi was forced to drop the Appeal in exchange for his release on licence to go home to die.
Normally such a release would not require cessation of Appeal. In this case, and this case only, it was made clear to the prisoner that if he wanted to be treated as normal by the Scottish Prison Service and be released on licence when all medical evidence showed that life expectancy was only a very few months. he would first have to drop his Appeal.
He did so and was rewarded by being allowed to go home in time for Ramadan to die.
Political? Yes, of course. Everything about the affair has been political, right from the moment the Iranian government launched Operation Intekam to avenge the IranAir Airbus bombing by USS Vincennes.
Megrahi is the 271st victim of Pan Am Flight 103 and the 561st victim of Iran Air Flight 655.
