Yes its a deceitful way of instilling fear in the minds of people. The US govt. is trying all the possibilities to garner the support of its own people, most of whom are againt any war. There are so many fronts on which the US Govt. is working to sway public opinion against war.
1. Artificial increase in gas prices. Because of the capitalist culture most american people are simply selfish and self centered. They dont care if one million innocent people die in some part of the world, they must have the lavish luxuries they have been accustomed to by spending the wealth stolen and robbed from those poor countries. As such the American Govt. gave a signal to the oil companies (mostly controlled by Dubya's family and freinds) to artifically increase gas prices. Gas is now being sold at over $2 in many big cities. The public response would be "Go for a war no problem if you can bring down the gas prices back to $1.20 . The AAA in its press release has condenmed the artificial increase and has categorically stated that the current situation in the middle east and in venezula may be grim but it has no bearing on the oil output and as such the price rise is not a direct reflection of that situation.
The US govt. is also trying to make the life of its citizen hard by announcing threats of different colors Yellow, orange red, voilet and whatever, making life a hell by cooking up morbid tales on the ostensibly free press (read state controlled), pushing the stock markets down etc.
