<i>There are no WTO definitions of developed and developing countries. Members announce for themselves whether they are developed or developing countries. However, other members can challenge the decision of a member to make use of provisions available to developing countries. <i>

World Bank uses following groups/criteria -

Per capita income (Atlas method)

Low income, $755 or less;

Lower middle income, $756- $2,995;

Upper middle income, $2,996- $9,265;

High income, $9,266 or more.

Oman Per Capita Income is somewhere around $6500.0 so it is a Upper Middle Income group country. So is Saudi Arabia (around 8000 $).

Qatar (28,000) ,UAE(19,000) ,Kuwait (17,000) Bahrain (10,000) are High Income.

Political designation originally used (1963) to describe those states not part of the first world-the capitalist, economically developed states led by the U.S.-or the second world-the communist states led by the Soviet Union.
The third world principally consists of the developing world, former colonies of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. With the end of the Cold War and the increased economic competitiveness of some developing countries, the term has lost its analytic clarity.

I was shocked to learn in my sociology class that Oman and Saudi Arabia are the only two countries in the gulf categorized as 'second world' or middle income whereas the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar are all first world.

With the rise in population of Oman, the GDP has been on a slight but constant decline for the last 6 years or so. Unless there is a rapid industrial expansion and a substantial decrease on oil dependence, Oman will soon be counted among the third world countries.

World Bank 2001 tables.....

Saudi had at one point of time PCI close to US$ 27000..... but income remained same and population burgeoned (sp) and therefore it is now classified in upper middle income. (PCI appx 8000 USD as mentioned above)

Qatar, Kuwait and UAE have a lower population and a higher income. Their PCIs are high as mentioned in earlier post and thus they are high Income countries.

I agree with Mujahid. this is a day to remember. but yeah Oman has to start depending on Oil. And i actually think they are moving towards that goal...i am sure someone on Omanforum can shed more light on that.

Isnt India PCI like $450? I remember in the 90's, it was about $300+. I believe it's about the same for Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and many other countries.

Dear Forum Members and Topic Master,
I highly appreciate the topic of Oman's GDP and its economic growth indicators. Oman is harder to measure in economic terms because of its rapid growth. Oman is a developing country, so is Saudi Arabia, UAE and other GCC countries.
India - is a developing country or even possibly a LDC. However there are lots of statistical discrepancies in these measures. Those who are comparing India - to Oman or to any other GCC country are simply mistaken. India has a population of 1.3 Billion. To extract the GDP per Capita you have the country's Nominal or Real GDP whichever you want to by dividing the population. Its very wrong to compare a GCC economy to India or any other economy. The GCC economies have been developing and trying to diversify. India has already diversified same with Pakistan and the other countries LDC. They have to take time because of other misnomers in the economies. One has to understand that India was under occupation and after that was not a stable country for 10-15 yrs stunting its growth. In addition to that
So please please don't compare Oman to India. India has had a lot of governance problems, and Oman on the other hand is very stable and moving forward.

When a topic like this arises one has to be willing to take constructive criticism. May I remind all of you, this is a forum to discuss and not to criticize, others, share your knowledge and learn don't be narrow minded in days of globalization.
