    Default Certificate Attestation for expats

    Hi,

I came to Oman four years before for employment and right now I’m working in a company in Muscat. While coming to Oman then,I didn’t get my educational certificates attested. Recently, Oman government has amended a rule that all the educational certificates have to be attested before coming to Oman for employment.

Does this means that now, I will have to get my educational certificates attested in order to get my visa renewed.

Can anyone please let me know, what is the best way of getting this done in Muscat or does one have to go to their home country for completing the formalities for the certificate attestation?

Expecting a reply from you all. Please help.

I believe you will need to provide several letters from the educational institute , your ministry of education, and the Oman embassy in your home land .. well all depends on which University has issued your certificate then get a letter from them , and yeah not to forget a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where you completed your studies and where your certificate been issued. this is applies to Omanis.
In your case as a foreigner i am not quite sure, it could be the same process.
contact your embassy they might be helpful!!!

Why dont you let your company handle the issue of your visa???? I am sure they know what to do

If you have the originals just take them to your embassy and ask them to attest a couple of copies for you. Take these attested copies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and get them to attest them too. The embassy and MoF will stamp the copies and put a revenue stamp on em. Then youre ready to go! Dont panic its easy as pie. Done it myself a dozen times

Thanks for your suggestions. Even I was under the impression that on producing the originals, the local attestation would be done by the embassy. However, they are insisting that these certificates have to be attested by the Indian ministries before they do anything here. Oman foriegn affairs ministry will accept it only after attestation by Embassy here.

    Am confused.....

Perhaps the rules are a lil different for Indian citizens. You should ask your embassy how and where it needs to be done.

I had to get my school certificates attested. Its simple. Go to your embassy and they will attest it. Then you have to go the ministry and they attest it .. thats it..
    ....Whatever

There are different ways in proceeded with an authentication of the diploma(this is from U.S. based experience):

    a) You may go to the registrar’s office and request a notarized degree issued to you. Usually Universities have a notary on hand or have a notary come with you and witness dean signing the degree.

    OR

    b) Notarize the copy of the diploma with an affidavit

Both ways maybe accepted, however, it is best to verify with the target authorities which one suits them best. Some countries require the diploma to be brought in for accreditation into respective authority designated by the target country this is done to avoid misuses of the legalization process by the diploma mills.

The Apostlle which is a separate page affixed to the document authenticates the document in accordance to the Hague Convention of 1961. Not all countries accept apostille thus it is best to check the list of the countries that signed the convention or consult someone competent on the issue. In any case, without an apostille any document has no validity outside the country of its origin.
Furthermore, apostille only authenticates the documents intended to be used abroad. There is no purpose of getting an apostille if you plan to use the document in the same country the document was issued.
Here’s a link about Authentication of Academic Credentials

    Hope this helps.

This procedure is one big b^&*h. First you slog it out at uni for 4 long years and then they don't trust the piece of paper your uni gives you, which is the only document you have to prove your degree! This system sucks.

Yes I've heard of some crazy attestation stories of people travelling to their state capital and running from Ministry to Ministry and getting them attested and then making a trip to the national capital, etc etc. But I've also heard of these agents and I feel the earlier post is more of an advert than anything.

My PRO told me all I need is my embassy's stamp and that's it. He'll manage the rest. So I just have to wait and see. Will let you'll know if it works out. He's not the only one who gave me this advise though so this must be possible. If it doesn't work out I'm calling that no.!

I do agree the system sucks but then there has been many instances of fraudulant practices such as getting a engineering degree certificate without having to go through the actual process of studying the same. The attestation is being done just to be sure that the certification submitted is authentic.
This has been prevelant in UAE for maore than 20 years and in fact we had to attest the marriage certificates, children birth certificate for applying for residence visa ,from UAE embassy in India for which we need attestation from Ministry of foriegn affairs first.

Oh yes I do agree with you as there have been many instances of fraud.

IMO I dont think wanting proof that the degree is "real" is a bad thing... in some african countries you can just go buy your degree...
