Default Import Rules for Cars into Oman

Are they any rules regarding the importation of older cars into Oman. I read somewhere that in the UAE you cannot import a car older than 5 years and once you import a car you cannot sell it if it is more than 10 years old.

I have two cars (2004 & 1999) that I would like to import since they are paid for.

very interesting topic, I am also interested to find out.. but to be fair, you would have to give the forum more info if you want answers.

perhaps our fellow forum member DuXc can enlighten us with the procedure of importing, regulations to abide and modfications to the cars coming from other non-middleeastern countries.

if anyone else has any info on the subject, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share it with us,

    cheers

    No problems - I imported a 1996 registered car.
Turn up at the docks with your shipping agent, plus paperwork for the country your are exporting from.
    get car inspected
    pay import duty
drive car out of docks on import plates
get letter from ministry to state that it is a private import
    get insurance
    drive car to police inspection
    get new plates
    return import plates to police

    Interesting

How long can the car be driven with those Import Plates? do you have any windows tinted by the manufacturing?

    thanks for sharing

I have now successfully imported my car into Oman, once the vehicle is at the docks the procedure is as follows

Get an importing agent to clear customs for you, this costs about 150 OMR including port and mooring charges.
They will require the paperwork of the country your are exporting from

    Things like
    - Proof of ownership (Title and purchase order/bill)
    - Bill of Laden

you will also need a letter of non-objection letter from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to state that it is a private import.

If you have all the documents, this should take 1-2 days. The Import Agent will pay the import taxes for you and then you pay them.

    Get Insurance

After paying the import agent, you will receive the documents that allows you to get the 10 day green import plates (costs 4 OMR) from the Police, you can then go back to the docks and drive the car out.

Drive the car to the police for inspection

Go Home and Park the car, remove the green plates and go to the Police

    Hand the green plates back
Register the car as normal (can cost anything from 20-60 OMR) – then get the new plate request
Get the yellow plates done (Behind Sultan Centre) they cost like 1 OMR.
Go back home fit the plates and away you go.

every time you get an original document, get a photocopy

Do i have to get a proof that the car customs were paid even if its a 3 years old car. meaning that customs must have been paid but getting the papers will take time so im thinking of just driving it to the border and see.

Draft a letter in arabic addressed to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry stating that you want to import your car for private use, if you are an expat, make sure this letter is printed on headed paper from the company you work for.

The ROP does not like seeing cars with Tints (even if they were fitted by the manufacturer). So, if your car has tints (even if it the rear windows only) prepare yourself to fight a few battles when going for registration.

Where are you shipping from and what type/year of car?

    best of luck

I am in Kuwait and considering a job in Oman. I want to drive my car from Kuwait through KSA and UAE to Oman. I will have all the export documents but is it possible to import a car like this or do I have to send it by freight? The car is your standard Toyota Prado 2006.

Are there any import taxes I need to be aware of for this sort of import, the car is for private use. Or would I be better off selling it and buying a new one?

Who is the local Toyota dealer (Family name)?

Appreciate any advice or anyone who's done this before (Kuwait to Oman).

    Default Export cars from Oman

I am posting this info because I had a tough time getting the right directions.

    1. Go to the ROP (Vehicle licensing division) at Qurum and obtain a vehicle export form (there are 2 forms). Tip: Request for an additional copy as a back up for any typing mistakes.

    2. Go to the typing center (in the same ROP campus) and get them to fill the forms with details from your Mulkiya and Residence card.

    3. Take the filled up form to the insurance company and request for a 10 day export insurance (third party is cheaper, Dhofar insurance charges less than RO 20). The insurance can be renewed if necessary for up to 2 months.

    4. The insurance company will fill, stamp and sign the vehicle export form.

    5. Take this form to the Qurum ROP center and get your vehicle inspected. No charges. If the vehicle is almost new, this is a 15 minute job. Tip: Go at 0800hrs as it is less crowded

    6. Now pluck out your number plates (you have to do it yourself) and go the main ROP office building and await your turn.

    7. Pay any traffic offenses and get the export number plate.

    Caveats:
    1. If you are exporting your car within the GCC, ensure that the car is exportable. Some GCC countries have a vintage restriction for the vehicle.

    2. Check if your driving license is portable.
