Thread: Driving test - drums

    Default Driving test - drums

A few tips for those going for drums test in salalah. I have used this tip nissan sunny B14; I cannot say whether it is ok for other models .

On either side of the lines of drums, there are 2 lines on the road; from one side it is 9 foot from the drums and the other side 4 foot.

The procedure for the test is:

    From the 9ft side,
    1. Align your car so that it is midway between the four drums adjacent to the eight drums - take your time to do this, it is vital
    2. Start backing until the rear wheel has passed the line by 1 ft, then cut completely.
    3. Back the car into the two lines of drums.
    4. When backing, check in your sides windows, if going too close to one side, make the wheels straight for a small distance and then cut fully again until you see the four drums line on your both mirrors.
    5. Then back straight slowly and carefully

    From the 4ft side,
    1. Here, you must put a small mark on the wheel guard of your car on the driver's side. The mark should be around 7-8 cm from the bottom and should be visible from your side mirror..
    2. Align your car so that it is midway between the four drums adjacent to the eight drums - take your time to do this, it is vital
    2. Start backing until the mark on your wheel guard and the line on the road coincides, then cut completely.
    3. Back the car into the two lines of drums.
    4. When backing, check in your sides windows, if going too close to one side, make the wheels straight for a small distance and then cut fully again until you see the four drums line on your both mirrors.
    5. Then back straight slowly and carefully

I hope that it works for you. I do not know whether there are lines in muscat though.

Umm.. it took me a very long time, but I finally figured out a fool-proof way of getting into the drums with any car. You have to look at a particular drum and when it's at the right position in the back window, that's when you stop reversing straight back and start reversing into the drums.

There was no need for marks on the wheel guard.

It's important also to be able to adjust the car when entering the drums. Sometimes you need to turn the steering one way, and sometimes the other way to try to centre the car properly.

Lastly, you need to make sure you are always centred even when reversing through the drums. Some people have hit the drums at the back, and failed, because they thought they were centred but the car was actually going slightly to one side.

It also helps to practise with extra-narrow paths.

Sorry that I can't be more precise than that.. I know I can do it because I went back to the drums, after passing, and I could get in with a larger car.

Thats EXACTLY what I did. It is a fool proof plan.

And none of these 'tricks' will help you in the real world. It's all about judgement. 9 times out of 10 I never have to adjust when I reverse pack. It's usually straight back into the slot. In the real world there's nothing to tell you when to start turning into the slot.

On the 3rd day of my driving practice I had thrown all the tricks out the window, passed drums in the first go and was wondering what all the fuss was about. But yeah, those drums are really close and you'd probably never park into a slot with cars that close coz you'd never be able to get out of ur car. :-P

After passing I still have never reverse parked in the real world. I can achieve the same thing by parking in the right direction. Complete waste of 2 months of my life.

no your not lol. Sometimes i'm lazy as well. Sometimes if im in the mood I just take up 2 parking spots so no cars will come close to it and scratch it. But then I pray that no-one keys my car LOL.
