Below is an excerpt from the News Paper. One thing, after the article I manage to find out who is responsible for all this and legal proceeding is on going
One of the most popular online discussion forums in Oman with at least 10,000 members was hacked and the database deleted. “It’s not the job of an amateur. This person knows what he is doing and how to cover up his tracks. He is a professional,” Salim al Harthy aka Neo, Omanforum’s founder and administrator told Muscat Daily.
Recently, an unknown person hacked into Omanforum.com as Neo and tampered with the website, which led to its collapse for five days. Using Harthy’s account, the hacker sent messages to administrators, moderators and users and asked them to give away their passwords. “One of the administrators gave him his password, which allowed the hacker to access the administration control panel.”
The hacker then deleted the Omanforum’s database with more than 3,50,000 posts on 25,000 topics. “Fortunately, every five days database backup is updated so the administrator was able to retrieve the site.”
The administrator sent messages to the members on Saturday after the site was revived but the hacker attacked again in the wee hours of Sunday. Harthy said, “The hacker established a backdoor on the server that allowed him to change the website’s data. I was awake for hours, went through thousands of files on the server to check where the backdoor is. I finally located it.”
Omanforum.com is back online from Sunday afternoon with a new security software. “We have upgraded security programme version from 3.8 to 4.1.2. If in the coming days, the hacker doesn’t cause website collapse again, it will mean that we have identified the backdoor on the server,” he added.
The hacker’s identity is still unknown. The administrator wasn’t able to locate him and the fact that the hacker uses different IP addressees makes it more difficult to identify him. “It’s the same as with a financial criminal. The first thing that the criminal thinks about before he commits the crime is how he will remove all traces of the crime,” said Harthy.
Omanforum.com is a platform where participants discuss current local and world issues. With more than 4mn hits per month, it is one of the most visited online forums in Oman.
