    Default VoIP usage in Oman

    Hi all,

This is my first thread here. I am here in Oman for two months and would really like to continue using Skype here. But, I've found out that it has been blocked by the TRA and both of the ISP's - Omantel and Nawras , respectively.

    These are my queries>>>

    1. So, considering the current situation how are my fellow members using VoIP services here in Oman.

    2. Also, is there any other legal way to use Skype by getting permission from the ISP.

    3. Can you even suggest any other VoIP -like software which I can use to voice / video call my friends and family abroad.

    4. Also, I would like to know if it is legal / OK in the sense--- to use VPN networks to bypass this problem. (Using VPN , you can access all websites or services which are currently blocked , I suppose).

P.S. >> I mean only fully legal ways of making VoIP calls

Your help will be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

Dobby, you shouldn't really be making threads on VOIP. This forum is probably being watched. You can message people in private and they might be able to help you out.

    Hello,

I am curious on this issue. Can someone simple explain me the legal issue about VoIP use in Oman?

VoIP is not VoIP (technically), so, it makes a big difference if using "real" VoIP or the services offered by Skype, Yahoo, etc.

    Thanks,
    Paul

The issue is, no one cares what is real VoIP or not, what actually matters is how much will local telecom companies stand to lose from their massive income on international calls.

Thanks for info, ok, now I understand. I thought before that its an issue of "controling every communication" regarding national security. I didnot think about business consequences for telecom companies.
