I will give you guys some background first:

What do you think of the switching over from analogue to digital transmissions?

This transformation will be taking place by the year 2010 in the UK if Im not mistaken. A lot of changes will happen. The analogue will be switched off at one point which means ppl will have to be able to afford to pay for digital transmissions otherwise they wont be able to watch Tv at all. Some ppl may have to even buy the digital equipments

The good thing about digital is that there's a lot to offer including good quality picture and sound.

The good thing with digital is that more channels can be transmitted than the analogue one but this also costs a lot more. Digital will also offer email, banking and shopping, and getting information on programmes

What do you guys think of this? is it fair to force the Brits to pay more if they want to watch digital Tv and soon not have a choice to watch analogue.

Would this work in Oman? would it help stop making ppl complain that we dont have much on TV? Would the ppl be willing to pay? [/color] In England, even with the basic channels (5 of them), we have to pay an annual fee of approximately RO 80 for the basics (they call it an annual TV license). If you dont pay for it, you would get fined. They have these vans going around from time to time with some sort of detectors. Would any of these ideas help make improvements in Oman? sometimes, an inflow of cash can help development. Sometimes, we have to pay the price to get what we want.

Who agrees? who disagrees? pls share your thoughts regardless.

Digital TVs are the best; it will take so much time to be implemented in the Middle East, in UAE they introduced cable TVs as the 1st step, the may be the 1st country in the Middle East will have the Digital TVs or if anyone will be ready to invest in Oman.

I know it's a big investment, but suppose Oman decides to have an upper hand on this matter and be distributers to the whole Middle East?

Sometimes we need to think a little way ahead. Anyhow, Im sure there's a lot of costs, but I dont have numbers to analyse this financially.

Anyone with ideas? Sometimes, it's good to have bigger dreams than what's achievable, that way you achieve a bigger dream than a feasible one that you dream of.

Its worth the money. I have digital and I will never go back to analog. If you have a big screen TV its almost like you are sitting in a theatre. Such is the picture clarity and sound not to mention hundreds of channels that you can watch. On the downside, hundreds of these channels show adult oriented stuff. You must handle your remote very swiftly if you are browsing channels while sitting with your family members otherwise you can stop at some channel showing a lot of skin from the forbidden places of female anotomy.

comparing Digital TV to analouge is like comparing the new oman forum to the old.

what I fear is more children will be less active watching TV for hours.

I mean ask your self what do u get from the TV these days that is useful for children.
most of the programmes are fiction and children grow up to be shallow with no knowledge or very little.

I dont understand how ppl can spend more than 2 hrs infront of the TV.

now you are telling me its gonna be all Digital I Say

O my EYE.

as if obesity is not a growing problem.

we in Oman dont walk reason its hot outside .
after marriage few ppl would exercie . reason my wife is a good cook i feel bloated .
well allow me sir, but you are the lazy head not ur wife's doing.

so we dont walk we dont exercise our kids are lazy , hooked on TV hooked on Video Games.
Eye problems, Obesity, no knowledge from books.

think of it !!
which is better speding an hour educating or Teaching your children smthn or watching a useless programme where boys and girls sing and dance.
what do u get out that?
NOTHING unless u r looking for talents.

think of it
which is better? spending 1 hr talking to ur wife and exchanging ideas or spending one hr watching a football match?
its a Disaster if you ask me!

I just happen to hate TV as its waste of time.

Mujahid,

I hear you, but I think porn would be controlled/banned or blocked for the ME region so from that aspect, things like that can be handled without a problem.

Pano,

I agree with you. TV is not really for children, but just because digital is available doesnt mean parents cant restrict their kids from watching it.

I think ppl should be responsible on how to divide their time. Obesity/laziness isnt the TV's fault or the programmes available - it's the ppl's responsibility.

I personally love watching movies from time to time, especially late at night, and documentaries are my favorites. But sometimes, I dont watch TV for days if not weeks. But for example, here, I wake up and have to watch the news at 8am daily - its just my thing. I cant do that in Oman with analogue tv. Anyhow, this discussion is about analogue and digital, it isnt about children etc. I understand what you're saying, but all of that can be controlled otherwise it's our own weaknesses's fault, not digi!

When the switch to digital took place here it also included up to a 12 number/character parental lock(s) on any channel. In fact, even though there were more channels with more skin there was much more and more flexible control available.

Digital has it all over analog (IMHO)

Invinci ....

I know this is besides the point,

That van you mentioned does not exisist... It was just an advertisement plot they were doing ...
"I have 3 TVs since moving here in London in 2000" I only registered one last year...
And I don't have to renew it ....

Actually the are doing the same thing for ppl who are claiming social security money now ...

But back to the point the facilities of banking and email come with the sky package and unless orbit or showtime introduce it ... I dont see it happening in Oman ..

Actually Orbit have already started it but you need to change your LNB on the Sattellite Dish and must have the Sagem Receiver for humax the you get ultra fast internate connection and you pay less than what you are currentlyu paying...

Well I wont add too much into the real debate here viz Digital vs Analogue....but I will vouch for Invinci's story about the van as in my days as a lowly student in London ...I got caught.....well....there were quite a few of us in the house, each with a TV blaring away...and there it was....bold as brass....the TV DETECTOR VAN....

Makes you wonder doesnt it....TV DETECTOR VANS...Myth or Reality?....they certainly did exist!!...BIG FOOT....NESSIE....SASQUATCH....what else is out there???
